Diaper Bag Essentials for Your Newborn

Congratulations parents! As you prepare for your newborn arrival, there are so many things to add to your shopping list. One of the most important items is a diaper bag and all of the essentials that should be included inside when you’re on the go. This is true for a first time mom or a seasoned pro, believe me there will always times when you realize that you forgot to pack something. And that’s totally ok. You’re not alone. I’ve done that myself more times than I care to admit!

This is obviously just a starting off point and not all inclusive by any means. These things should fit your own needs, preferences and lifestyle. Talking to your midwife, pediatrician, friends and family can also give you some really great ideas (and probably some that you will completely ignore!). Let’s get started on your newborn diaper bag must have’s.

newborn baby pacifier

Diapers: This would be number one on my “order of importance” list. I would recommend one diaper for every hour you expect to be out. Then add one or two extra, just in case. There is no bigger fear than running out of diapers.

Wipes: This one is a close second in my book. They do more than just clean your baby’s bottom. There are so many varieties to choose from these days, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, natural, organic, and my favorite, and what I use for my own newborn photo sessions, water wipes.

Changing Pad: Who wants to use a sketchy bathroom plastic changing station to change their baby, am I right? Just pack one 🙂

Change of Clothes: Babies are so unpredictable, but rest assured your sweet little one will have a blowout at the (insert sarcasm) most perfect time. You don’t want to be caught having your baby just in a diaper while you’re sitting at a restaurant. Oh, and don’t forget extra socks.

Extra shirt for Mom: Well this one is a definite. Babies spit up, they have said blow out and you don’t know it until it’s all over you as well. You may have also forgotten those extra breast pads that are next on my list.

Breast Pads: If you’re nursing, don’t forget some extra breast pads.

Blanket: This is useful for some extra warmth or for a cover if you are breastfeeding.

Disinfecting Wipes: I love to eat out and I don’t know about you but sometimes I question if a table has been cleaned in between customers. Use them for tables, and changing stations before you put down your own changing pad.

Wet-dry bags or just a plastic bag: These will contain that wonderful smell from a blowout, spit-up, or vomit episode.

Bottles: If you are formula feeding or pumping, don’t forget extra bottles and nipples (oh, and the formula or extra breast milk).

Pacifier – If your little angel is into pacifiers, grab one or two extra. Just trust me on this one.

I hope that this list of newborn diaper bag essentials is helpful for all of the new Moms and dads for your next outing.
